The chassis is sturdy/robust, attractively designed and all the ports are conveniently placed. Metal is used for the palmrest, giving a nice premium touch. The rest of the laptop is plastic but good quality, not flismy or creaky, and has an attractive metallic design. The keyboard and trackpad are flawless, I can't fault them as they're comfortable to use, smooth and reliable. It has an average bulk for 15" laptops and certainly is portable and easy to carry around. Connectivity: A decent wireless network card is installed which offers fast connection speeds to wireless 'N' routers and allows the laptop to be fairly far from the router without too much signal loss (as I type this I am in a room on the top floor of a 3 storey house while the router is on the bottom floor). The latest version of Bluetooth, version 4.0, is installed and works just as it should. The laptop has two high-speed USB 3.0 ports (one of these is a chargeable port which can charge USB devices such as phones even when the laptop is turned off) and two USB 2.0 ports, for a total of four which should be plenty for most users. The DVD drive is perfectly adequate and I have experienced no problems with it. Also included is an ethernet port for wired internet network access and a HDMI port for connecting to an external monitor or TV. Standard headphone and microphone ports are present here too. Display: The display is average for a laptop in this size class and price range. Nothing special but it won't detract from the overall experience unless you're one of those people who demand a premium top-class display. The screen is matte and so there are no annoying reflections when in a brightly lit environment. Screen brightness, contrast and colour levels are merely average but certainly sufficient for watching films/videos/PC games and browsing the web. It can also be enhanced in these areas greatly by adjsuting the gamma and colour settings from the control panel. Sound: One of the best features. There is no need to carry around external speakers with this laptop. With the integrated subwoofer the bass and volume of the speakers are very good. Easily filling a medium sized-room, the sound produced is clear, punchy and vibrant. To experience the true quality of the speakers you have to enable the SoundAlive sound enhancing system that is preinstalled. Performance: Excels in this area for a notebook of this price range. The i5-3210M processor is fast at 2.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3.1GHz. The CPU supports all the latest features of Intel's new processor range based on their 2012 architecture 'Ivy Bridge'. The integrated GPU, the Intel HD 4000 is a huge improvement on previous Intel GPU's. It can easily handle the majority of current games at low settings, along with Full HD videos. Plentiful 6GB of speedy, DDR3 [1600MHz] RAM is supplied along with a generous 1TB of sufficiently fast HDD storage. Gaming: The NVIDIA GT 650M is a fast mid-range laptop GPU. Based on NVIDIA's latest architecture 'Kepler', it boasts improved performance, power efficiency and features such as turbo boost up to 950MHz, Adaptive V-Sync, TXAA and FXAA support and DirectX 11.1. It comes with 2GB of DDR3 memory. This is sufficient to be able to play modern games at high settings at the native resolution of the display. Very demanding games such as Metro 2033, Batman: Arkham City, Crysis/Crysis 2 can be played at high settings while other games such as Mass Effect 3, Portal 2, Just Cause 2, Dead Space 2, Far Cry 2, Borderlands and RAGE can be maxed out with anti-aliasing enabled. The GPU gets a score of P2308 in 3DMark11, the latest benchmarking software for DirectX 11 GPUs. With future driver upgrades I expect the performance to increase. The GPU also supports NVIDIA Optimus technology for automatic switching between integrated and dedicated GPU's based on what you are doing at the time. Heat: The laptop stays relatively cool during heavy loads. No excessive heat can be detected and the fan works efficiently and quietly. When at idle the fan is practically silent. For intensive prolonged gaming sessions, the CPU and GPU always stay within safe operating temperatures. Battery Life: Due to using all the latest power-efficient technologies in the Ivy Bridge and Kepler architectures, this laptop has good battery life. NVIDIA Optimus helps to extend the battery life further by switching to the low-power Intel HD 4000 GPU when browsing the web and watching a video/DVD to the NVIDIA GT 650M when playing PC games which require the extra performance. Battery life on normal power settings lasts just over 5 hours with continuous use... Read more 17 of 17 people found the following review helpful ![]() Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?) This review is from: Samsung 550P5C 15.6 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5 3210M 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD SuperMulti DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Personal Computers) I've owned this laptop for a few months now and felt compelled to write a review.I have owned a large number of different laptops, desktops and Mac's over the last few years and regularly change my primary computer. This particular laptop replaced a gaming desktop PC with an AMD FX 8 core processor and dual high end graphics cards. Prior to that I owned a AlienWare M11x R2 laptop with all the options ticked (i7 CPU, 8Gb memory etc etc). I purchased this particular laptop on the strength of the Nvidia GT650 and Ivy Bridge i5 processor: I needed a more portable computing solution than my desktop but wanted to be able to continue to play games when time allows. In honesty I was expecting the laptop to be a compromise when it came to gaming versus my dual HD6870 desktop PC.... I was wrong! Of course the lower resolution screen helps proceedings (previously I was gaming at 1920x1080) but the reality is that I am playing my collection of Steam/Origin games with the same detail settings as was possible on my desktop! Mass Effect 3 with 16x AF and AA? No problem. Battlefield 3 with all settings at high (ultra is a push but then it was for my desktop!), done. In fact I'm yet to find a modern game that can't be run with a high level of detail and with post processing affects enabled @ frame rates higher than 30FPS! Of course this laptop approaches all the 'normal' tasks with ease. It has a great non-glossy screen, and excellent keyboard, strong battery life and support for a number of 'cutting edge' technologies such as 5Ghz wireless and USB 3.0. The build quality is excellent and it's dimensions are smaller than you would expect from a laptop packing a 15.6" screen. Another big plus for me is the lack of bloatware installed and the genuinely useful Samsung software included for managing image updates and system configuration. Any issues? The screen hinges could be stiffer and it could do with a few more USB ports but otherwise I am absolutely delighted with my choice... it might even mean my next PC purchase doesn't come around as soon as it might normally... my wife has her fingers crossed!! 14 of 14 people found the following review helpful ![]() By This review is from: Samsung 550P5C 15.6 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5 3210M 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD SuperMulti DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) (Personal Computers) I've to agree its an excellent laptop, the 650m Nvidia chip allows me to play Skyrim on ultra settings with AA and AF :),its very quiet and the matt screen is quite good for a 1366x768 screen.....I disabled clear type and and smoothing fonts in Systems and the text/screen looks so much better, btw you can game at 1920x1080 if you connect it to a 1080P screen/tv via HDMI.For the price you get a lot of value for money and its just a very good laptop with USB 2 and 3.0,Bluetooth 3 ,webcam etc...... 5 star product for sure. |
