Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung 700G7C 17.3-inch Laptop (Black) - (Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz Processor, 16GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD, Blu-ray, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
Well what can I say, an absolutely outstanding machine!!! I have never once written a review on anything but feel there is a severe lack of info available on this product and feel I need to speak up and let it be known just how good it is.

I've owned this laptop for several weeks now and certainly put it through its paces in that short time. I spent a good month looking for the ultimate gaming laptop that didn't break the bank so much, I love pc gaming but not enough to spend my life savings on one as I am a casual gamer. I looked at the obvious ones such as Alienware, but even although they have came down in price I still couldn't justify paying the price for the spec I wanted, plus I've heard bad reports on customer service etc and let's be honest the whole fancy lights and design doesn't appeal to everyone, especially a grown adult. I stumbled across samsungs range of gaming laptops after being completely unaware that they made laptops of this spec. After extensive research and debating whether or not to take the plunge, I finally plucked up the courage and hit 'buy!'

I received this product 2 days after ordering, arrived well packaged and bang on time as expected from amazon. First thing I noticed when taking the laptop out was just how flawless and beautiful the design is! The pictures do it no justice! I've heard people complain about it being a fingerprint magnet, but in the time I've owned it I've kept it out, moved it around and never felt the need to touch the glossy cover, and if it does get a fingerprint on it just wipe it off if this sort of thing bothers you!

As expected with a laptop of this spec the power brick is truly a brick, but again not a problem at all! Ill note now that I can quite easily fit this laptop and all it's accessories in my laptop case and carry it about no problem so if this is important to you like it is to me there's absolutely no problems in doing so. Yes the laptop is quite large but it's still perfectly portable and it's a gaming rig at the end of the day!

When I turned the laptop on for the first time I was blown away by the the screen, how bright and crisp it was, like nothing I've seen before. Everything looked amazing on it, windows 8 especially! I can confirm also that this screen is capable of running at 120Hz, all you have to do is go into resolution options and change it from 60Hz which is what it's on from the factory. It is a glossy screen but you don't know it when it's on as its so bright.

First things first I got rid of all the bloatware and program's I didn't want that were pre installed, and to be fair there wasn't that much, just norton trial and the likes, all which was removed very easily and quickly. I then updated windows with all the latest updates, downloaded the latest nvidea drivers etc all so the laptop was running perfectly with everything running at its best. At this point I was going to create a system image so I could restore my laptop to this state in the future, but due to the large required capacity I just settled with creating a recovery disk.

This was the laptop all good to go. I will touch on windows 8 briefly just to clear the air about any questions people may have. It did feel really new to me when I first used it, but it literally takes a few hours and you'll be all over it. The start menu is gone yes, but you still use the traditional desktop for carrying out most tasks, there is a quick launch bar included which is like the Apple Mac one which comes in very handy for launching games etc. You can still use windows 8 the same way as 7 it's just absent the start bar, which you'll quickly learn there is no need for anyway. The whole widget thing is handy and looks clean and modern, but as I said you just switch to desktop mode anyway for most things. There is no problems running windows 8, it works perfectly with the mouse, touchscreen is not something that's required to get the most out of it like most people say!

The keyboard is an absolute joy to type on, feels sturdy and complimented by the white backlight in balanced mode, or blue and red in gaming mode. The trackpad mouse is good too, but I've always hated these for anything more than normal use so as expected I use an external mouse.

The selector switch is a great feature of this laptop and one that actually works! Switch to gaming mode and you are greeted with a cool animation which lets you know it's show time. The processor is boosted by the intel over clock feature and everything runs on full throttle. It really comes to life! The keyboard illuminates blue with the WASD keys illuminating red. There are two rings around the volume and power buttons which illuminate to the noises made from games etc only when the selector switch is in gaming mode. I have heard people complain about them being distracting during gaming but I really think they are not overpowering, even in the dark,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Updated version of the machine released mid-2012 but not expressly designed for Win 8, 4 Nov 2012

This review is from: Samsung 700G7C 17.3-inch Laptop (Black) - (Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz Processor, 16GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD, Blu-ray, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
This laptop is externally identical and almost identical in terms of hardware to that released a few months ago, which I bought a little later and then reviewed in detail. The sole changes are a slight increase in CPU speed resulting in exchanging the 2.3GHz processor for the 3630QM 2.4GHz version and the replacement of Windows 7 Home Premium by Windows 8 Pro. There is a consequent small price increase, primarily due to the use of a higher-priced CPU. Although the slightly older version, and even the previous G7A where one version provides a 3D screen (no longer offered in the UK in later models), provide excellent platforms for Windows 7, there is a slight disappointment in this with Windows 8. I am not currently enamoured with Windows 8 - that is another story in itself - but this model does not serve it well. There are few currently available alternatives that could do any better and they are less well endowed in other areas, usually memory, storage, graphics card and screen size/quality.

The laptop is one of the fastest available and now slightly faster than it was. Designed primarily as a Gamer where it shines when turned to Turbo mode with a multi-colour keyboard backlight, it also offers a slightly slower Balanced mode that uses a plain white backlighting for the keyboard and which is more than fast enough for a demanding application such as Photoshop where the 16GB of RAM easily allows 16- and 32-bit images to be processed. A Library mode kills the backlighting and silences the usual system sounds and there is the final Green mode which uses the least power of all.

Although the touchpad allows some gestures and is apparently identical to that used with the Win7 models, it was not designed with Windows 8 in mind. The screen, although excellent and more than bright and contrasty enough for any normal use or application, is not the touchscreen that Windows 8 begs to use. The laptop may provide a better experience than most with Windows 8 due to its huge installed memory, excellent storage and the use of a small SSD as a drive cache, it might have benefited from the use of a slightly larger SSD used as a fast boot device. Windows 8 is potentially slightly faster to boot than Windows 7, but that speed is measured without being hampered by installing the usual pack of Office and graphics software, a media player to provide Blu-ray playback (Windows 8 does not offer one), several games and whatever else you may consider as 'normal'. They would very obviously slow Windows 7 start-up and may eliminate the claimed speed benefits of the newer system.

This laptop is undoubtedly one of the best currently available. The value received for the price paid is exceptional and beats the competition from alternative Gaming machines regardless of manufacturer. Similar specifications from any competing brand could easily add 30-50% to the price of this model. However, Samsung have not redesigned the model to better suit Windows 8 and that is its sole criticism. On the other hand, a touch screen, a more comprehensive 'gesture touch pad' if one exists and possibly some of the additional Win8-specific keys supposedly provided by Microsoft's Windows 8 keyboard would make it better suited to the OS but would raise the price considerably.

As a side comment, Samsung have released an 'Upgrade Suite' for users of this laptop with Win7 factory-installed and who wish to upgrade to Win8 with a clean install - the recommended approach. This pack includes a number of system drivers (graphics, wireless, Bluetooth etc) and several System utilities, some of both groups of which are specific Windows 8 versions and I would imagine that these are factory-installed on this machine.
